Author Suzanne Collins’ words will soon come to life on the big screen.

If you haven’t read her books, you might have seen the trailer for “The Hunger Games,” the first book in her trilogy along with “Catching Fire” and “Mocking Jay.” The series follows a group of characters in the nation of Panem who are fighting against their rulers.

“The Hunger Games” introduces the reader to the 12 futuristic Districts located in a nation called Panem. There is one Capitol, which is where all the wealth comes from, and the 12 districts which rank in descending order in terms of wealth.

Due to a rebellion against the Capitol by District 13 (which was destroyed), the Capitol holds an annual lottery in which two people from each district must participate in the Hunger Games. From each district, one boy and one girl ranging from ages 12 to 18 are randomly selected. They are then forced to fight to death and their battles are televised for all to watch.

From District 12, Primrose Evergreen was chosen from the girls, but her older sister, Katniss, volunteers to take her place in the Hunger Games. Along with Katniss, Peeta Mellark is also chosen from District 12 to fight.

After the couples are chosen from each district, they are taken to the Capitol where they scout their fellow tributes and see the talents they possess. On the first day of the Hunger Games, 11 of the 24 participants die. As the fighting continues, the Capitol changes a rule and announces that two people from the same district are allowed to win instead of just one.

After that announcement, Katniss and Peeta pair up to work together as a team in hopes of winning the Hunger Games.

To find out what happens and who wins the 74th Hunger Games, the book is definitely recommended. If you would prefer to watch the movie, it will be released in theaters on March 23.
