At-a-glance

Revere High School’s International Club has not only continued to familiarize members with foreign countries but has also expanded international awareness and cuisine to all students.

International Club consists of students that show interest in learning about countries other than America.

Senior co-president Troy Valentik explained how International Club’s introduces different ways of life.

“We usually meet the first and third Wednesdays of each month. . . There, either a foreign exchange student or one of our own students who is familiar with a certain country, either they have travelled there or are in touch with their ethnicity, will come in and do a PowerPoint or presentation. It’s multimedia; they show pictures, videos, talk about the history and statistics. They also bring in some of their own ethnic food that they cooked at home,” Valentik said.

Senior co-president Katie Minchak defined the goal of International Club.

Our purpose is to expose students to different cultures and broaden their perception of the world. . . My favorite thing about International Club is that not only do you gain knowledge about certain countries, but you hear personal stories of students,” Minchak said.

Valentik said that beginning this year they have introduced “Taste the World” in which they provided a free, school-wide food tasting during lunch time. The Parent Student Teacher Association partially sponsored Indian restaurant Saffron Patch to give samples at lunch. Valentik explained plans for future food tastings and how it helps both our school and the restaurant providing the food.

“[Our next food tasting will be] House of Hunan, Asian food, and I believe they are doing a kind of vegetable lo mein. Not only does it help the restaurant with their advertising, but they’ll come in and talk about health benefits of the food. [First trimester] the owner of [Saffron Patch] came in and talked about health benefits of the different spices and the anti-oxidants in them,” Valentik said.

The House of Hunan food tasting will be second trimester and in conjunction with a presentation of China during an International Club meeting presented by Leon Zhang, Annie Sun and Edwin Zhang.

Upcoming in International Club is the possibility for students from RHS to study abroad and bring students from overseas here. Senior co-president Ali Kovacevich stated that the Rotary Club of Bath are adults in the Bath and Fairlawn community who do public services such as donations and fund-raising.

“Next year, we are working with the Rotary Club of Bath. . . . We’re looking at becoming a mini-rotary club which is called an Interact Club for high school students. It could give us the potential to not only bring in more foreign exchange students but also to send some of our own students abroad,” Valentik said.

International Club will continue to strive for new members so it can share beliefs, lifestyles and cuisine of foreign countries.
