Selena Day [ArticleImageHyperLink] Thursday, April 12, 2012 By Zac Mantooth Advertising This coming April 15th marks the birthday of the music star Selena. Born in Lake Jackson, Texas in 1971,  Selena Quintanilla-Perez began in music early when her father launched a family singing group (composed of his children) known as "Selena y Los Dinos" when she was 10.  By the time she was in eighth grade, there was such a demand for her to perform that her father pulled her out of school so it wouldn't interfere. Selena became very popular in the Tejano world and won Best Female Vocalist of the Year and Performer of the Year at the 1987 Tejano music awards. Tejano is a Mexican style of music that incorporates other genres such as country. Due to her success as a musician during the 90's, billboard magazine named her the "Top Latin artist of the 90's" and "Best -selling Latin artist of the decade." On March 31, 1995 she was murdered by the president of her fan club. It is believed that the shooter was about to be fired for embezzling money from Selena’s club.  Two weeks after her death George W. Bush, who was the governor of Texas at the time, declared her birthday "Selena Day." Our Spanish classes at S & S Consolidated will be watching the movie “Selena” starring Jennifer López, in remembrance of Tejano Queen: Selena.
