People are pressed on a daily basis to be as skinny as they can, and sometimes this can cause people to go to extremes to meet these unrealistic criteria.

There are many different types of disorders that affect people on a daily basis, while most eating disorders commonly affect teenage girls more than any other group. They can affect girls and boys of any age. Many people believe that eating disorders only including starving themselves; however there are issues that involve over exercising, or in some cases, overeating.

There are many different types of eating disorders that affect people, including anorexia, bulimia and binge eating. Anorexia is a disease that involves too much exercise and too little eating. People that suffer from anorexia see themselves as overweight even when they are clearly underweight. Bulimia is a disease where people eat an excessive amount and follow by force themselves to throw up, the purpose being to get a taste of the food but not gain the weight. Binge eating disorder occurs when people go on long runs of eating without exercise. They just feel the need to eat for long periods of times, unlike many other disorders, people that are affected by binge eating are mostly overweight and have a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure. Much of the binge eating occurs during the night time so people don’t see them doing going to these extremes.

Eating disorders can also be caused by depression, anxiety or even substance abuse. Many of the disorders can have life threatening affects on people, or even cause life long damage to their bodies if the disorder is not caught early in life. People that suffer from a eating disorder are 18 times more likely to die at an earlier age then people not affected by these terrible diseases.

These diseases harm mostly teenagers but can develop earlier in life or later in life. Many of these disorders require much care once the disorder is diagnosed. There are rehab facilities, therapy and in some cases medications that can help to cure the disorder. Eating disorders are an illness that can harm many people over a course of a lifetime and need to be caught and treated before they become out of control.

Ms. Beaudet has written an excellent introduction to eating disorders. In the work I do as volunteer lobbyist and advocate for the Eating Disorders Coalition I have learned some other hard statistics: 1. More young people (under 18) die of Eating Disorders than of suicide each year. 2. More people live with Eating Disorders than HIV/AIDS 3. People are not born with Eating Disorders, they develop them by getting a negative body image through being told by media, friends, coaches, boyfriends, parents and advertizing that they need to be different. Please learn early that healthy eating includes all foods, learn to enjoy eating. The only person to take advice from about your body is your doctor. Enjoy being young and love the body that you have. When you get old you will miss it.
