On March 30, 2012, Greek Mythology gurus got a new look at the Greek Gods, as “Wrath of the Titans” was released. The movie stars Sam Worthington as Perseus, and Liam Neeson as Zeus. The movie begins 10 years after Perseus’s defeat of the Kraken. Perseus is quietly trying to live as a fisherman, and raise his son Helios. While this is happening, an already big rivalry between the Gods and the Titans begins to become apparent. The humans are lacking devoting to the Gods, and the Gods begin to lose control of the Titans, and Cronos. Cronos is the father of Zeus, God of the Gods, Hades, God of the Underworld, and Poseidon, God of the Sea. Kronos if forever imprisoned in the abyss of Tartarus, which is a dungeon, ran by Hades in the Underworld.
Cronos was imprisoned because he swallowed and ate some of his kids, and those kids who hadn’t been eaten gave him a rock to eat instead. This allowed the rest of Cronos’ kids to grow up safely. Cronos ruled the Titans, and “The battle between gods and Titans was called the Titanomachy. The battle lasted a long time until Zeus freed his uncles the Hecatoncheires and Cyclopes from Tartarus. Zeus and company won and Cronus and the Titans were shackled and imprisoned in Tartarus” says about.com.
In the movie, Zeus comes to visit Perseus, and he tells him that a battle between the Gods and Titans is coming. The humans aren’t praying to the Gods enough, and this is allowing the Titans to almost break free. Without Gods, the Titans would be able to walk the Earth and destroy everything in their paths. Perseus is still frustrated with his father, for never being there for him, and dismisses Zeus. Zeus knows of this battle coming, and he and his brother Poseidon go into the Underworld to talk to Hades about the situation. Ares, the God of War, is already in the Underworld. When Poseidon and Zeus tell Hades, Hades and Ares turn on them. Zeus is taken captive, and his powers are siphoned and given to Cronos. Before Poseidon dies, he returns to Earth to tell Perseus about what has happened. Poseidon asks Perseus to go find Poseidon’s son, Agenor, who is known as “The Navigator.” He is supposed to help Perseus.
Perseus now goes on a mission to find Agenor, and get to Tartarus, a dungeon deep in the Underworld, and free Zeus. On Perseus’s way to find Agenor, he runs into Queen Andromeda. Andromeda, Perseus, and Agenor find their way to Hephaestus’ Island, to get his guidance on the way to the Underworld. When they arrive there, they defeat three Cyclopes’. The Cyclopes’ show them the way to find Hephaestus. Hephaestus helps them find a secret passage to the Underworld, but a servant to Queen Andromeda prayed to Ares, and Ares is sent to Earth. Ares and Hephaestus battle it out, but Ares eventually defeats him. This scrum allowed Perseus and Agenor and Andromeda to get away.
They eventually find their way into the Underworld, and find Tartarus. They find where Zeus is and try to free him. Hades and Ares try to stop the escape, but Zeus’s words convince Hades to stop and join sides with Zeus once again. Back on Earth, Perseus, Andromeda, Agenor, Zeus, and Hades get ready to battle Cronos and the Titans. But to defeat Cronos, Perseus needs the Spear of Triam, the only weapon that can defeat the mighty Cronos. The Spear of Triam is when Poseidon’s Trident, Hades pitchfork, and Zeus’s Lightning Bolt combine to make a spear. Perseus has all but the Lightning Bolt, and battles Ares for it. Once he has the Spear of Triam, and epic battle occurs at the end of the movie, including a little action from Zeus and Hades, who fight off the Titans with Agenor. This movie is great, and in my book, it deserves 8 out of 10. Definitely worth the watch, so go check out “Wrath of the Titans.”
