On February 16, eight political representatives of District 25 and 26 paid Cardozo a visit for a meeting concerning the school’s lackluster budget. Principal Martori hosted the event in the conference room. As the elected officials took their designated seats, Martori began with by highlighting Cardozo’s overall achievements.

"Cardozo is a place where kids find something to connect to," he said. "We are known for exceeding the standards."

Mr. Martori continued with a briefing of Cardozo’s progress report, which heated up the discussion.

"It is very unfortunate that this year our school received a very low B. It’s embarrassing enough that for the past five years we’ve stayed along the B margin," said Martori.

Councilman Daniel J. Halloran commented that the progress report grade does not necessarily reflect the school’s overall capabilities. "I believe that the top priorities are budget cuts and overpopulation," he said.

Since 2007, Cardozo High School has been struggling with monetary issues due to budget cuts and low funding. The budget of what used to be $20,684,206 has been lowered to a mere $20,008,693.

Our overpopulated school of 3,900 students has only enough classrooms to administer to the capacity of 2500. Many AP (advanced placement) classes that are suppose to be double periods have been cut and the "bottom end" students that require special education are not receiving proper attention. All these are factors to the school’s deteriorating grade and passing rates.

State Senator, Toby Ann Stavisky, who was appalled by the statistics, made the suggestion of getting parents more involved. Instead of closing down schools, opening up new ones in the right areas would solve many of the problems. The enrollment and zoned programs were also pressured to enact stricter regulations. The meeting eventually concluded with suggestions for Cardozo’s issues.
