When it comes to the sport of soccer, there are many great commentators. To name a few, there is Martin Tyler, Ian Darke and Clive Tyldesley. For University of Louisville soccer, Trinity art teacher and soccer coach Mr. Dale Helfrich works as a color commentator.

“I coached at U of L for four years,” said Helfrich, who has been commentating for five years. “Then I changed jobs and started commentating. It’s not a full-time job. I was available, and it sounded fun to me.”

Helfrich, who also coaches youth soccer for the Kentucky Fire Juniors, said, “I played (soccer) when I was a young pup.” 

He played forward and became a defender. Among the teams he played for was the Coca-Cola Soccer Club in St. Louis, Mo. 

Among the great soccer players who have played for U of L, Helfrich mentioned two who excel in the pro ranks -- Austin Berry, defender for Chicago Fire, and Nick DeLeon, winger for D.C. United.
