This past weekend the novice forensics squad went to Lee’s Summit West High School to compete. Truman definitely had a great showing on account of the many students advancing to semifinals and finals. For many it was their first time ever competing against other schools.

“This was my first tournament,” freshman Justin Burton said. “I feel like it went very well. Many of us made it to semi-finals and finals. I am very proud of the entire team for doing such a great job.”

In Duo interpretation, Burton and Alex Millard made it to finals and placed fourth. Freshmen Emma Baker and Tabitha Williams placed third and freshmen Carly Beck and Teala Sadler were Duo champions placing first. In storytelling, Williams placed fourth, freshman Grace Wood placed third, and sophomore Rosie Smith was the storytelling champion.

This was Smith’s second tournament of the season and she feel her hard work definitely helped her dominate the competition.

“Coming in first was really exciting; it felt like all my hard work had really paid off,” Smith said. “Although I feel like it will get more difficult because there is still a lot left for me to learn, it should get easier with more experience and help from my varsity, coach, and squad.”

Smith was not the only novice who had a successful tournament, Williams who had placed in the top six of both of her events also had shown her true skill. Her sister, senior Tara Williams, had placed fourth at the national tournament during the summer in Duo with senior Michael Cohen. Leaving a lot to live up to, she feels she can only learn from her experiences.

“I'm going to work a lot harder on my storytelling, and being sure I know what to say,” Williams said. “One of my main goals is to at least break to semifinals and do well at a varsity tournament. I expect to do alright in most of my events, and only continue to improve and learn for the rest of my years in drama.”

On the debate side, freshmen Andrew Huber and Christian McClure placed fourth in policy.

All novice being only first year competitors, they each have derived experiences to learn from. But the results from the Lee’s Summit tournament had shown promising competitors that just may be the school’s future national qualifiers.
