“Romney Ryan 2012!”

This phrase has been heard on nearly every corner in the highly conservative halls of Duncan High School during the 2012 election season.

To see which candidate students supported most, a survey was conducted of 36 seniors; 33.3 percent supported Obama, 44.4 percent supported Romney and 22.2 percent were undecided as to which candidate they support.

According to the survey, it would appear that students support Romney more often than anyone else, but other results of the survey show that students are hardly aware of the actual views of their “supported” candidate. All of the Obama and undecided voters agreed with Obama’s democratic views more than Romney’s views. Consequently, only 62.5 percent of Romney supporters actually agree with Romney’s Republican views over the Democratic counterpart.

Senior Scott Haas is a registered Republican, but he voted Democrat in this election.

“I mainly side with Republican views because of the social issues, but that’s not what’s important right now. I think we need to focus on the debt right now, and Obama is now starting to make slow progress to get back where we were. Employment is below eight percent now,” Haas said.

Senior Abby Bredy is another registered Republican who also has very conservative social views, but she says they are the reason she voted for Mitt Romney.

“I really like Mitt because he is against gay marriage and abortion and other issues like that,” Bredy said.

But that’s not all Bredy agrees with Romney about. She is also very much against the Affordable Care Act also referred to as Obamacare.

“I think it’s just stupid, and we spend too much money on it,” Bredy said.

Not all students share those conservative views though. Senior Makayla Harlow is a registered Democrat and stands fully behind Obama in this election.

“I come from a middle class family, and Obama has policies and actions that prove he cares for the middle class. Romney, like many other republicans, does not have policies that support the middle class. That’s the main reason I voted for Obama,” Harlow said.

Harlow also thinks that Obama is more consistent with his views on policies than Romney.

“Obama normally sticks with what he says. Romney just changes everything, doesn’t share his plans and criticizes Obama. I’d like him more if he stopped being so secretive and stuck with all of his views instead of changing so much,” Harlow said.

Haas also agrees that Romney is too inconsistent with his views and said that he could not find someone who constantly lies and switches opinions to be a trustworthy person. But Bredy is the exact opposite and claims that Obama is untrustworthy because of his economic practices.

“I just don’t see how we could vote for someone who is so far in debt. It’s stupid to be in debt to other countries like China. And starting the war was unnecessary and too costly. I just don’t agree with Obama,” Bredy said.

Whether they were supporting Romney or Obama, many students got involved in this election, and several went to the ballot box on Tuesday to vote for their candidate of choice. These student voters have played a part in determining the outcome of the next four years in the United States.
