Everyone has probably heard about the Mayan Calendar predicting that December 21st, 2012 will be the end of the world, our last day on earth. Another speculation is that there will to be 3 days of darkness; no electricity, no light...nothing.
The following text was posted on Facebook December 11th, 2012 :
“On 21 December, the Earth will enter a still ring called the Photonic belt at 1:00 AM, Colombian time. Our planet will go off completely, and will last for 3 days of darkness. NASA confirmed it December 5, 2012. It is said that when it is completely dark you will feel cold and there will be flashes of lights, "nothing is going to happen, is just an extraordinary phenomenon that happens every 11 million years." It is recommended to remain in your houses as power fails or electronic devices. 3 Days of darkness will pass. This is what the Mayan calendar was referring. A planetary alignment. NOT the end of the world. You have to be prepared!”
Nasa was questioned by concerned people about the apparent “Doomsday”. “Absolutely not”, said Nasa’s website.http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html#end “Neither NASA nor any other scientific organization is predicting such a blackout. The false reports on this issue claim that some sort of "alignment of the Universe" will cause a blackout. There is no such alignment (see next question). Some versions of this rumor cite an emergency preparedness message from NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. This is simply a message encouraging people to be prepared for emergencies, recorded as part of a wider government preparedness campaign. It never mentions a blackout.”
So to all those who are scared out of your mind, don't worry. This isn't the end. Go home and enjoy your Christmas break and New Years and we’ll see you in 2013!
