Teens Covering Houston

At-a-glance

It’s seen all the time, almost everywhere you go, there are those couples who don’t mind displaying public affection. While the moment is cute and affectionate for them, it comes off as repulsive and disgusting for some to watch.

In Mascoutah, IL, Megan Coulter, an eighth grader, served two after school detentions for hugging two of her friends. School officials said it violated the Mascoutah Middle School’s ban on public display of affection.

This sparked a debate recently in a Furr High School classroom.

“I feel that’s is disrespectful, and kids will take it to the next level” said Markeshia McDride

While other students felt the same way, others thought it was more natural and since kids are going to do it anyway, why shouldn’t they be allowed to kiss their boyfriend or girlfriend. But one thing that all the students agreed on was that there should be a limit on how far to go.

“It’s understandable that certain PDA is restricted but other PDA like holding hands is just too strict you should be able to hold hands because even in elementary you could hold hands with your best friend or your girlfriend,” seniors David Kinard said. “But stuff like making out and having sex is just disturbing to other people and classes.”

Of course people, teens included, are going to get physical in some sort of way with the person they’re in a personal relationship with, some believe that there is indeed a right time and place for everything.

“I think there are places it is just not appropriate for people to engage in such activities,” teacher Andrew Horne said. “School and work are the two main ones.”

Though people definitely know that certain levels of PDA are entirely inappropriate for different public places, when engaged in the moment of affection some forget about it completely.

“Before I was in a relationship of my own, I was always annoyed with certain types of PDA like kissing,” Alyssa Gonzales said. “However, whenever I’m with my boyfriend I forget about everybody, and even that I felt grossed out when I saw a lovey-dovey couple.”

But what students are not aware are the images that their setting for their selves. Teens see that they’re in love or lust, and only feel the butterflies in their stomach. They’re not seeing the importance of how this affects them and the image it can have on them.

“PDA is only viewed as disgusting because people just take it too far,” Reginald Johnson said. “I think younger people show their feelings in public because they’re too immature to know better.”

When it comes to taking action, you can’t stop students from doing whatever it is their going to do outside of school. But you can stop them from being a disturbance in school.

There should always be a time and place for when students can share time with their significant other, but school should not be one of them.
