In late October super storm Sandy devastated parts of the Caribbean, Mid-Atlantic and United States. The damage cost an estimated $65.6 billion; this makes it the second costliest hurricane behind hurricane Katrina in 2005. A charity linked to the popular show Jersey Shore has been created to help the victims of Sandy.
Although the infamous shore house wasn’t damaged, the shorelines along the state of New Jersey were hit particularly hard by Sandy, and the TV show has come up with a charity service to help rebuild the shore. Supplies are being given to nonprofit companies, and the Red Cross, who are directly helping those affected by the storm. All of the money collected will be given towards the cause.
Many students at PHS have heard about the cause and enjoy the efforts being made to help other people.
“I think that it is important that people are helping the people who lost their homes, and who are struggling because of the super storm, and it is good that programs like Restore the Shore are helping out,” said senior Maggie Albert.
“It’s interesting because the show has a reputation for being unruly and wild; but it’s nice seeing big name companies helping out, “said senior Briana Beseler.
The methods of fundraising include online donations, local fundraisers like benefit concerts and the Restore the Shore online shop that sells clothing apparel and wristbands in local schools.
Restoretheshore.com, the official website of the charity, has constant updates of what other people around the country are doing to help the victims of Sandy. This includes benefit concerts, colleges like Notre Dame holding events to raise money for the cause and updates of the construction to help rebuild the Jersey coast.
The website makes it very clear that people do not have to live by the shore to help out. Anybody can donate on their website, buy clothing from their online stores or donate other objects to the victims.
It also gives other direct help to the victims by giving them places to go if they are in need of food or shelter.
“Some people have no homes or food after the hurricane and they need help. It seems like the New Jersey shore was hit pretty hard so it’s good that there are a lot of efforts being made there,” said senior Paul Kriegel.
The victims of Hurricane Sandy are getting a lot of help from charities, especially on the coast of New Jersey which is in the process of being rebuilt because of the efforts of programs like Restore the Shore.
