Gun Control Controversial, But People Must Protect Themselves
Advertising

Following the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT., the issue of gun control is one of the most talked about and controversial subjects in American law. Guns are one of the most dangerous and easily accessible weapons, and it seems as though lately, incidents involving guns are on the rise in all corners of the country.

Teenagers have been found shot in their own homes, and schools have been the most likely candidates for a maniac's split decision to construct a mass shooting.

Just Thursday, Jan. 31, a 14-year old student was shot outside Price Middle School in Southeast Atlanta by a 15-year old classmate in what Atlanta Police is speculating is a gang-related shooting. The 14-year old has been released from the hospital and the shooter arrested as authorities decide whether to charge him as an adult.

Atlanta Public Schools has released a statement that the metal detectors at Price weren't working the day of the shooting.

Many citizens want to see guns slowly disappear from American life. They want guns banned completely, hoping that such atrocities never again happen to innocent bystanders.

But what happens when the need to protect yourself arises? How is a person expected to protect themselves and their family if an intruder enters their home?

Without a gun, the situation could change from one of scaring off an intruder into an a situation in which an entire family could be left without a lifetime of valuables and forever living in fear of another burglar tearing their home apart.

Guns do account for a large chunk of the deaths in the nation daily. However, when used correctly and put into the hands of people mentally sane enough to know the consequences of using them, guns aren't as dangerous as they seem.

Most obviously, they offer protection. If some lunatic comes into my home and threatens to kill me and my family, I'd pray to the heavens with every fiber of my being that someone finds a gun and gets rid of the intruder.

Otherwise, what's stopping him from wiping out my family and getting away with all our own little treasures? If there were a gun in the house, my family would be protected, and there wouldn't be an almost sure chance of immediate death at the hands of a criminal.

While guns are one of the main causes of death and violence in the United States, they are almost essential when it comes to protecting yourself, and it's guaranteed that in many situations, without them, someone we all know and love could possibly get seriously injured or killed.

I'm not saying that everyone should be armed with assault rifles to ensure protection, but guns shouldn't be banned completely because in many situations, when used correctly, they are helpful.

I would agree that there should be stricter laws that would eliminate certain people from obtaining the weapons. Maybe psychological tests should be given to anyone looking to buy a gun to make sure no schizophrenics or others with mental illnesses get their hands on a gun and lead another mass shooting.

When you fill out an application for a weapons permit, it is submitted to your local law enforcement agency and then forwarded to the Department of Public safety (State Police) for a thorough back ground check, which can take up to three month to process before it is approved and authorized then sent back to you. The writer of this article would do well to go through the application process because there is much more to it than just filling out the application. Everyone who has ever applied must go through an firearms safety course and submit along with the application a certified safety certificate and three personal character references with a state and federal fingerprint card signed by law enforcement. The current laws are stricter now, so tell us your version of stricter laws... Amber Burks!

I do not believe you understand what transpires in a matter of seconds when unwanted people enter your home by force. It simply is not possible to have a gun at the ready at meals,in the shower, playing with your kids, watching the news, fooling with the spouse.Time is the main problem, and if you have kids access is a problem. The people entering with intent probably have a plan.I do not have the answers to these problems, and your intent sounds good.My best advice is to not put your self in a position to need a gun in the first place if at all possible.Get as much training as possible if you do purchase a gun. Also make your home very difficult to enter when locked, and to make your home appear to be difficult to enter. And dogs make great early warning systems. On a personal note, the arming of our schools is a tough situation at best.I would love to see all kids covered at all times. However with assault rifles available to everyone and seemingly the weapon of choice to use in these mass killings. It is apparent that guards with hand guns would be a minimal deterrence.Even guards with equal weapons would bring on prolonged gun battles in our schools. So if one were to arm the guards at schools they should have extreme fire power and body armor to end any intrusion quickly. In the end our schools will look like prisons and the children feel like prisoners. This leaves gun control as one, but just one of the growing pains this nation must endure.

Dont forget wild animals, what would you do when you find a bobcat, bear, or rabid dog in your home

Good story. For the life of me I don't understand why we are not talking about the real elephant in the room. We have 8,000+ handgun murders every year and only 358 murders involving rifles. If we stopped all the assault rifle murders and all the murders done by insane people we would not make a dent in our gun murder rate. Chicago has 7 gang shooting in one day yet I see no talk about stiffer penaltys for the gang members who are all carrying guns and shooting up our streets. I would like to see gun control start with the criminals. Give them a 10 year term for a prior felon caught with a gun. Make them feel the pain of getting caught with a gun is not worth the risk.

Why do you have to protect your family with something so deadly as a gun? Why not something less deadly like a taser?
