For the first time in two years, TC Roberson’s marching band has a new drum major.
Elise Bare is a junior and has been in the band for three years playing the flute. After auditioning and beating the eight applicants who tried out for the role, Bare has taken on the responsibilities of being drum major for The Band of Gold.
“The drum major plays the role of a teacher. Elise is a leader and sets a good example for the band,” band director Mike Wilson said.
To qualify for the role of drum major, students have to have one year of marching band experience. The students then have to prove that they can conduct, have strong vocal command, march, and come up with their own salute. Then, once selected, they go to a drum major camp of their choice.
“It’s a lot of work,” Bare said. “I’m seeing a side of band I never saw before.”
The new theme has a rock and roll beat compared to last year’s classical Disney theme. Bare says that the Bon Jovi music is exciting and that she is more in to the music this year.
“I didn’t really know Bon Jovi’s music before, but I love the beat,” sophomore band member Mary Clair Grube said.
According to Wilson, many of the freshmen are not used to the work that goes in to the marching band. Senior Alex Jones says it’s always more difficult for the freshmen the first couple of weeks.
“ [Bare] does such a good job, it doesn’t seem like a student is conducting,” freshman Ashley Fromm said.
Bare, who earned ninth flute chair in the state band out of the thirty applicants, also plays first chair in Roberson’s symphonic band.
“Elise is outstanding. Just as good as last year, and the students really respect her,” Wilson said.
With the new music comes new drills, and for Bare there is more to prepare for on game nights and at marching band competitions with her added responsibilities.
“The practices are long and hard, but games on Friday nights are worth the practice,” Fromm said.
