Cowboy boots, black hoodies, scarves, converse shoes, and skinny jeans. Each of these fashion statements probably spark a picture in your mind, or dare I say a type of person. Does the music you are around effect the clothes you wear? With all of the options teens have to access new and different music, it is only fair to assume that seeing these people and their fame makes us want the same. Do we really dress according to our music? “100% yes,” Said country fan and Centennial Senior, David Laing. “I wear cowboy boots and shirts, because it reflects the person I want to be, it’s inspirational.” It seems all different genres’ fan can agree that the musicians are a symbol of success and stature. Indie kids, metal kids, scream/ emo kids, grunge rockers, and rapper wanna-bes seem to section off, common interest with common interest. “I started out listening to Avril Lavinge back in the day,” said fellow senior Laura Wiski, “and it all grew from there.” It seems as if when we do not want to believe it, we all dress toward a certain type of trend, call it peer pressure or just call it high school. Laughing Ryan Lyk said, “Yeah, I dress kind of in the emo/scene style but I like it.” Anything other than a segregated, cliché high school would seem like the twilight zone. We need the separation to keep the status quo in check. Mixing of the students is attempted but step into the lunch room and you will see exactly what option and society does. We may choose the music we listen to but in reality does the music really choose us? Are we truly the demographic the music “plays” to? I can not help but wonder why this happens. I still firmly believe that the music we choose, in turn chooses who we become. Everyone needs to find someone to relate to and at our age, teenage angst lyrics seem to say it best.
