If you are still at school between the hours of 4:00 and 6:30 on any given afternoon of the week, you will undoubtedly notice the freshman football team practicing, either on the main turf field on the side of school or on the practice field right in front of school. The freshman football team has undergone a grueling few months of preparation for the fall season, from the April conditioning sessions all the way to the daily practices in June, July, and August.
The team currently holds a record of 1-1, having lost to the Ryle Raiders by a single point, producing a final score to the close game of 28-27. The following week, the Colonels quickly recovered their reputation, bringing home a stunning victory against the Campbell County Camels with a final score of 54-0. Unfortunately, the next week for the freshmen football players did not hold as much luck as the previous week; the team lost to Highlands in overtime with a score of 14-8. The week after that, however, the team once again brought home a victory against Highlands with a final score of 39-12.
Some of the players who have brought incredible talent and skill to the field include Bobby Beatrice, the running back, Blake Bir, the quarterback, D.J. Powell, the linebacker, and Daniel Hellmann, the defensive linesman. These players, along with the entire lineup of young men dressed in white jerseys and blue pants, can partly attribute their successes to their dedicated coaches, Mr. Hovan, Mr. Fangman, Mr. Connor, Mr. Roedig, Mr. Groneck, Mr. Conrad, and Mr. Michaels.
So far, only one team member, Brett Micek, has been injured in the line of play. He has two bone fractures, as well as a separated spine. With a little hope, the team will continue in its success without adding any other names to the disabled list.
If you are looking for something to do on one of the upcoming Wednesday or Thursday evenings, consider coming to join the established fans in supporting the team as it rivals Highlands, Conner, Simon Kenton, Dixie, and Boone County. If everything goes as it the team would like, the long hours of conditioning and practice will continue to pay off as they have these past few weeks and ultimately result in qualification for the playoffs!
