JROTC Rifle Training Held in Vicksburg
Advertising
JROTC attended our first Rifle Team Training on November 16, 2009 . We traveled to Vicksburg High School for this training. There were seven other males who attended the trip also, and they were: James Stokes, Reginald Mack, Kenyawhri Harper, Lederious Carter, Jimmie Johnson, David Craft, and Cordarius Bland. We arrived at the school earlier than we thought because we had to wait for the students to finish school before we could go to the shooting range. There we meet Colonel Hood and he gave us a quick tour of his JROTC building. The building was separated from the school and had a gym for the basketball players.
We sat in the class until the bell rang and watched a clip of their pictures for all of the performances they had done. Once the bell sounded we waited for the marine instructor to arrive with his rifle team so that they could train us with the rifles. We learned three different aiming positions and also the correct way to hold the gun. We held the air rifles which are pellet or bb guns as you all know. The first position is called prone position. This is when you lay flat on the floor and get a straight shot on the target, the second position was the standing position which is considered the hardest because you have a great wobble point, and the final position was the kneeling position, which is when you sit on your heel and rest your arm on your knee to get a straight shot.
I do not have anything to correct because everything was perfect including our behavior. After all of the training we didn’t get to shoot because it was getting late, so we left and they invited us to come back again. They talked to us about their tryouts and many of us could make it if we wanted to. But maybe next year the students of Hinds AHS will get the chance I had to join a rifle team. We were also well fed by Chief Thompson, so food was not a problem. I encourage anyone that want to participate in these activities to talk with me and I will let him know to take you with us next time.
