The 2010 Duval County Fair will be held on February 26 and 27 at the Rotary Park.

“All students that are enrolled in an Ag class and is an active FFA member,” said Mrs. Ruby Guerra, FFA Sponsor, “is eligible to participate in the fair.”

Students primarily can show market animals, such as steers, swine, lambs, goats, rabbits, and broilers or they can choose to show breeding stock.

“In order to participate at our county fair students must validate their projects on specified validation date,” Mrs. Guerra said.

The largest category entered at the fair is usually the non-livestock category which includes prepared foods, cakes, pies, cookies, candies and breads, in addition to the arts and crafts like textiles, floral, welding, woodwork, jewelry, and clothing.

“For the fair, students can enter and sell one food, one arts and craft, textile, floral, and one Ag mechanics or woodwork project,” said Mrs. Guerra.

This year, Mrs. Guerra has 75 active FFA members but only 70 will participate in the local fair.  In addition, she also encourages her members to participate in shows at the Freer Fair and the state level live stock show in San Antonio.

“About sixteen of my students participate in fairs other than our local fair,” said Mrs. Guerra, “I want them to gain the experience that comes from this kind of exposure.
