With the girls basketball regular season coming to a quick close, the lady Tigers are looking towards Regionals with anticipation.
This season, the girls varsity team has worked hard and shown determination to reach a current record of 13-6 overall and 10-5 in the Olympian Conference. Since the Tigers have the two leadings scorers in the conference, Michelle Piepenburg with 306 points and Kelynn Sporer with 296 points, the team has had an obvious advantage over other teams. Michelle has an average of 16.7 points per game and Kelynn has 15.6 points per game. Brittany Mirshberger has had 172 points so far in the season and is also third in the conference in rebounding.
"We’re working hard to secure the number one seed for Regionals," said head coach, Ray Mlada, "and we want to win both of our games this week in order to control our own destiny for playoffs." The girls traveled to Mishicot on February 23 and Reedsville on February 25. If the Tigers beat both the Indians and the Panthers, they would secure the number one seed and a first round bye in the playoffs.
Coach Mlada also said the three seniors on the teams, Emily Maurer, Sarah Mortimer and Katie Leitner, have been a driving force throughout the season. Their leadership has helped the team in many ways.
The meeting to decide the different seeds and regional playoff picture still needs to be held, which is happening soon. "Everything is up in the air right now. We’ll know more after we play Mishicot, but I’m hoping we’ll play Two Rivers at home on Thursday, March 11," Coach Mlada commented.
Overall, the next weeks for girls basketball look promising, but the team will have to keep the intensity they showed against Roncalli, a game which they won 56-51. "We’re just taking it one game at a time right now. We hope to capture the number one seed, win our regional game, and after that just let things fall where they may," said Coach Mlada.
