On Wednesday March 10th, President Obama met with Haitian President Rene Preval. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss various options for the United States to further aid Haiti after the devastation earthquake and aftershocks. Port-Au Prince was destroyed, leaving over 217,000 people dead. Obama assured the Preval that the United States understood how dire the state of Haiti remains. The United States has provided $700 million in aid to Haiti and over half of all American households have made private donations to Haitian relief. February Parliamentary elections were postponed due to the catastrophic earthquake. Hillary Clinton has vowed that the United States will continue to “work with the international community to hold elections as soon as appropriate.” Haiti has been experiencing aftershocks with magnitudes up to 6.0. The relief effort has been steady, but the country is still in a state of shock after the mass destruction of the capital, Port-Au Prince.
