According to Spanish teacher Marissa Higuera, Spanish club has been advised by Spanish teachers such as herself, Ana Haynes, and Alicia Broshuis for six years. The club meets once a month on Friday mornings at 7:30 a.m. in the library, and the officers meet with Profesora Haynes once a week.

Spanish club’s officers are president Melissa Culberson, secretary Katie Garner, treasurer Brandy Lafentres, vice president Julia Weber, activities director Shanda Boren, and the ambassador Landon Beck.

Spanish club does many activities. “We have our welcome back-fall picnic. Also we have a Zumbathon for Hearts for Africa, last year we collected five hundred dollars for them. We did it in the old gym and lots of schools participated. Three other zumba teachers came,” said Higuera.

Spanish club isn’t just salsa and games they also help out their community and the environment. “Twice a week we collect plastic bottles and take them to the recycling place in Jackson. We also do fundraising and adopt a family in need during the Christmas season. Some other activities are we have picnics, lock-ins, movie and pizza evenings in Spanish, salsa and zumba classes, and we go out to Mexican restaurants,” said Haynes.

Profesoras Higuera and Haynes give their opinions on Spanish club. “My favorite part is doing fun activities like singing, dancing, and using the language,” said Higuera.

According to Haynes, she enjoys how much the students enjoy using the language outside their classrooms and how they communicate with each other.

They just recently had their welcome back fall picnic on Tuesday, October 12th. “We ate Taco bell tacos, played frozen shirts, and hillbilly golf,” said Higuera.

“My favorite part of the picnic was playing the games. We played hillbilly golf and ultimate Frisbee,” said junior Celeste Bolen.

One teacher expresses her wishes for the new year. “I hope students will stay motivated to learn the language and culture of the different Hispanic countries,” said Haynes.
