On Tuesday May 5, 2010 at a New York City artwork auction, the artwork “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” by Pablo Picasso was sold for $106.5 million, a world record price in any art work auction.
The painting which was brought to America in the 1950’s belonged to Frances Lasker Brody of California. The painting was kept with her family ever since then.
The previous record for the highest priced artwork was $104.3 million sculpture named “Walking Man I” by Alberto Giacometti on February 3, 2010 at Sotheby’s in London. Picasso’s previous highest price of art was sold for $104.2 million for “Boy with a Pipe” attainted in Sotheby’s New York.
At Christie’s Auction house, the estimated price for “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust” was only expected to sell from $70-$90 million. There were 9 minutes of bidding with 8 clients in the sale room and on the phone. At $88 million, only 2 bidders remained. The final bid was up to $95 million, but the unidentified phone caller raised the final price to $106.5 million. Head of the Impressionist and modern art for Christie’s New York, Connor Jordan says, “Tonight’s spectacular results showed the great confidence in the marketplace and the enthusiasm with which it welcomes top quality works.”
North Harford junior Sammie Still says, “It is crazy how much artwork can sell for, ever after the painter is deceased. If I had $106.5 million to spend, I personally wouldn’t buy artwork.”
