The 2009-2010 school year was a period of distinction for the Lindenhurst High School music program. The hard work and dedication of faculty, staff, parents, volunteers, and students yielded outstanding results in terms of performance skills developed. In addition, the program made a positive impact on the local community. In the waning months of the semester, the program has
become increasingly prolific.
A high standard was established in the fall of ’09 when the Lindenhurst Marching Band attained a score of 91.55 at
finals, a higher score than we have gotten in years. The music program provided critical support to the Thespian Troupe’s performance of Urinetown: The Musical in the form of a pit orchestra. This musical was performed on January 22nd and 23rd 2010. In addition, on April 24th, as a service to the community, Odyssey, Song Birds, and the Jazz Ensemble, performed at the senior citizen prom. While the Concert Choir performed at the New York Islander hockey game at the Nassau Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum on April 6th, 2010.
In keeping with past years, the activities of the music program culminated with the participation of the students in the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Festival. This year’s festival, held on May 7
th and 9th, was more noteworthy for the Lindenhurst program than past years’ because Lindenhurst High School hosted the event. In addition to our student musicians and our teachers, the event was supported by parent and student volunteers. Prior to hosting NYMSSA, Ms. Gellert and the Lindenhurst High School Symphony Orchestra took home a gold rating at NYMSSA Majors. Performing at level four, the orchestra earned the highest rating possible.
On December 22, 2009, the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and Concert Choir performed at the Winter Concert. This was merely a taste of what was to come in the spring. On May 19
th, 2010, the Spring Concert was conducted at the school. The audience enjoyed performances by the above ensembles, in addition to those of the Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble, and vocal groups Odyssey and Song Birds. The night was a both an exhibition of talent, and a culmination of all the hard work that students and staff put in throughout the school year.
