Most
clubs at Brevard High School are open to any interested such as
Environmental Club, Interact, and Quizbowl, but some clubs are much more
exclusive. The National Honors Society, NHS, is a perfect example.
NHS
is a club for students who excel both inside and outside of school. In
order to qualify to be a member of the club, one must have a cumulative
GPA of 3.75 or higher and submit forms to be reviewed by a board of
faculty members. These forms ask what clubs the applicant is a part of,
what awards they may have received, any volunteering they have done, and
other questions about their character.
This
year, 12 new members were inducted into the Brevard High School chapter
of NHS. They were: sophomores Kassandra Brewer, Kayla Byrd, Kevin
Elliot, Colin Fenner, Leah Johnson, Jessica Porter, and Allison Walker;
and juniors Kellie Chieu, Sarah Johnson, Kathleen Miller, Krista
Rickards, and Isaac Shular. May 25, was the induction ceremony. There,
the new members pledged to uphold the NHS standards of scholarship,
service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
Current
NHS president senior Austin Jenkins said “At the ceremony, we explain
what the club is about, then we have a presentation of colors
from Wesley Holland, Brendan Elliot, and Paul Connell. Andy Thompson
sang the National Anthem for us. All current NHS members helped to bring
the induction ceremony together and and we are so proud of them for all
of their great work.”
Each
year, members of National Honors Society must complete 10 hours of
tutoring and an Independent Service Project, ISP, as well as a group
service projects. This year, NHS participated in the fall
Rent-a-Student, and the spring Upper French Broad River Cleanup.
Jenkins
stated “Students have literally volunteered hundreds of hours of their
time to better our community. We are so excited about all of the
wonderful things that our new inductees will be able to accomplish next
year through NHS.”
