West Jordan High School Bowling Team - Robin Duffy
According to bowl.com, last season over 50,000 students competed in high school bowling for thousands of schools across the country. You probably wouldn’t know it, but high school bowling has been around since the 1930’s, and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.
The United States Bowling Congress has a goal of a day when every state will have a high school bowling team available. Utah has already become one of those states, and our very own West Jordan High School is one of the many lucky schools who is able to have a team. Coach Steve Terakami, who has been the assistant coach for Bingham High School and bowled for UCLA in college, says “bowling is fun competition.”
The team was composed of 2 girls, and 8 boys, ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade. The top bowlers were Brady Carlson with a score of 245, and Ben Grangroth with a score of 233. They made it far in the season, and had a great time. Marae Mair said the best part about the team was, “just being together and having fun,” while Alec Grangroth said it was, “the teamwork.”
If you’re interested in joining, it’s 60 dollars per person, and the bowling shirts can cost 25 to 30 dollars. You’re not required to have your own bowling ball, or any bowling gear for that matter, and they welcome beginners in the fall. Teammate, Isaak Talatau says if you’re wanting to join the team, “be on time, and be ready to have fun!” They also have a page on Facebook, so check them out!
