Student Apathy Leads to Low Academic Success
Advertising

According to Fox 5 News, teachers in the Clark County School District are being blamed due to their students’ low test scores. However, it is not entirely the fault of the teachers for the unsatisfactory scores.

Student apathy is the culprit in this sick plot. Students that don’t care about their education believe that these test scores don’t matter to them.

Apathetic students may think, “This useless information won’t help me any in life, so why should I bother myself with something I won’t need to remember in a year?”

There are many variables leading to students becoming disinterested.

Students are worried about other things outside of school, such as jobs, relationships, or family issues.

Some students feel the need to get jobs because of the economic troubles. In order to help their parents with expenses, students work rigorous hours to help put food on the table.

In addition to spending numerous hours at the workplace, that leaves no time for the student to get homework done.

When they’re released from work late at night, students have no time for homework unless they want to lose sleep.

Relationships can also effect how students feel about education. If a student has issues with their boyfriend or girlfriend, they’re less likely to concentrate during classes.

Students will think of how to resolve the problem, or how to settle emotions rather than focusing on today’s math lesson.

Family issues can impact a student’s performance in school. If students have to constantly babysit their siblings they could become distracted from their homework.

Smaller siblings especially have to be watched constantly. Students must keep an eye on their siblings to prevent harm, thus have no time to take their eye off the sibling to concentrate on schoolwork.

Aside from personal issues, students are so indifferent about education because of the advancement of technology.

With our iPods, cellular phones, gaming systems, Facebook and Twitter, this generation of students lacks the ability to stay focused on schoolwork.

To some students, Facebook and Twitter is their life. When one’s life exists on a social networking website, students wonder if they would rather do homework or interact with peers.

Even with all sorts of distractions to avoid doing schoolwork, some students just don’t care.

Some students don’t try just because they dislike their teacher; by refusing to do schoolwork, they are essentially trying to show their teacher “who’s the boss.”

This makes the student look like a Cretin, while the teacher is sitting behind his or her desk silently laughing at the foolish student while updating grades.

In each class that a high school student takes, there is always at least one student who destroys everything for the class: the so-called “class clown” who thinks he or she is so cool.

To these people the question is thrown out there: why bother coming to school at all if you do not care and continually distract the people who do want to learn?

Perhaps these pupils attend school only for the attention of their peers and teachers. By acting out, these kids get attention from administrators when they have to constantly reprimand the student since they don’t get the wanted attention at home.

When youth act out to gain attention in class, most think that they’re invincible and will be set for life once they grow up.

Looking back from a dead-end, low-paying job at age 40, he or she will think, “Jeez, I should have paid attention in school and applied myself.”

For students to better apply themselves at academics, students should also join sports or clubs.

Students who participate in after school activities are more likely to care than people that just show up to school because it’s the law. By participating in a sport, it can be seen as motivation for students to get good grades.

To be eligible to play a sport, students must maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA).

This makes the pupil actually try to get good grades, or else they will be kicked off team.

Some clubs, such as National Honor Society and Renaissance Club have specific guidelines in order to partake in meetings. For students to even join these clubs have to get a certain GPA; students who don’t care about school honestly won’t be interesting in joining clubs, however Renaissance rewards students for their hard work.

With pizza and ice cream parties, Renaissance’s rewards could also be seen as a motivation for student to get pumped about school instead of becoming a couch potato.

With its various reasons, whether it’s work, relationships, advancements of technology; there is no excuse for pupils to be so careless in school.

Education is an important aspect of one’s life and will change forever. After these clowns get a Certificate of Attendance instead of a diploma, they will linger in their parent’s basement with dead-end, lousy jobs for the rest of their lives!

Stop being lazy; take a couple minutes and get off Twitter or that Nintendo DS to do that math homework that was due yesterday. Grab a friend and get involved in a club.

According to Seen Magazine (
