It’s a battle to the financial death: Droid versus Apple.

As Apple says, "There’s an app (application) for that." The head-to-head competition between the two companies has heated up.

While the Droid is catching up to Apple faster than expected, Apple is busy trying to expand its offerings before Droid takes over through its much larger user-base.

App-wise, Apple leads with over 230,000 items offered through the Apple store. Droid falls behind with a platform of a little over 70,000, according to msnbc.msn.com.

The Droid is run through Google and, of course, the iPhone has the full backing of its parent company, Apple. The site says most game developers are holding back from jumping into Droid’s system.

"I wouldn’t blame them because the iPhone deals with just Apple and with the Android they would have so many more systems and versions to have to re-create," sophomore Mason Auten said.

Because they are so accustomed to designing for the Apple system, re-creating each game to be run through Google would take time and money that they don’t want to spend.

Complicating things further, the Droid comes in a variety of screen sizes and processor speeds. This meaning that game companies have to re-size their games to fit each format.

One thing that Droid is running in the lead for, however, is the ability to multi-task and offer its users items called "widgets."

Almost everything on the iPhone has to operate through an app.

"With apps themselves set aside, the iPhone can’t multi-task like the Droid can so my mom’s iPhone is always freezing up," senior Shelby Dayton said. "This is where the widgets come in handy."

According to msnbc.msn.com, a widget is an extension of an app that appears on the home screen.

Tagged along with the Facebook and Twitter widgets for the Android comes an instant sync to contacts.

This means that there is no longer a need to use the app when status and tweet updates are shown through the contacts list.

"Apple just has better apps because they’re the original designs," junior Jessica Wood said. "The coolest thing about the iPhone is double camera."

A great function that the iPhone has that the Droid doesn’t is a built-in app known as "FaceTime."

According to store.apple.com, FaceTime makes video calling a reality.

The iPhone’s dual camera, one each on the outside face and the inner face, makes it easier to video chat and take pictures for almost anything.

"Their apps are becoming more and more the same, so eventually it will turn into just which phone runs better," Auten said.
