Coach Ruben Palms had the intention of holding the girls’ soccer tryouts on Sept.13. Unfortunately he received news a few days before that Los Angeles Unified School District wants all players cleared by the nurse indicating they had a physical before they try out. This new rule was immediately enforced on the winter sports even though it hadn’t been in previous years.

This didn’t please Coach Palma at all. Instead of having tryouts Sept.13, he held a meeting on the softball field and told all returning and new girls the news. The girls now have to get their physicals within the next two weeks, take their results to the nurse and get cleared.

Coach Palma pushed back tryouts to Oct. 3 after school on the softball field. Coach Palma said he doesn’t agree with this whatsoever. It’s cutting into the time that the teams could be practicing, getting ready for the season, he said. It’s a waste of time for the girls who try out and don’t make it on the team.

This isn’t convenient, he said because the girls who made the team used to have the time to get their physicals in the month or so before preseason started and were allowed to practice in the meanwhile.
