At-a-glance

African American Awareness

The African American Awareness Club at Walled Lake Western is one whose mission is to raise awareness about African Americans through discussion and interaction between the races. The club is led by President, Lauren Scott, and Vice-President, Raymond Howard. Although the club is called African American Awareness, it is not only for African American students, but for students of all races.  They discuss topics affecting African Americans in hopes to bridge the gap between the different races and diverse community. Meetings are held once a month, usually on Tuesdays from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.

The club also has a mentorship program for underclassmen. The program is geared toward guiding and helping freshmen and sophomores to understand the values and importance of high school and helping them take each step. Having a “Big Brother or Sister” (or “Little Brother or Sister”) helps students in most cases. The mentors help their mentees with homework or talk to them when they have an issue they can’t solve on their own. It is a helpful program for most freshmen. They go on fun outings and bond with each other. It is quite an exciting experience to be a part of.

Join them. Become aware.
