After a disappointing season of 5-21, the South-Doyle boys basketball team is looking forward to more success with the new head coach, David Scott. In a recent Phoenix interview, Scott responded to various questions about the 2011-12 season.
Phoenix: As the new head basketball coach at SDHS, what are you expecting from your boys?
Scott: “I expect excellence, both on the floor and in the classroom. I want players in our program that have character and want to strive for excellence. That is the goal. It will not be accomplished over night, but with hard work and commitment we will get there.”
Phoenix: What are your aspirations for the upcoming season?
Scott: “I want to win the conference and district tournament and compete in the region tournament. It has been a long, long time since South-Doyle placed a team in the regional tournament, and I believe that this team has the talent to do it.”
Phoenix: What appears to be the team's major strength?
Scott: “It is hard to say at this point, since we have had no practice time. Our identity is going to be our defensive play. We are going to play an up-tempo style and look to be aggressive on defense. With our athleticism and length, we should be successful playing this style of basketball.”
Phoenix: What areas do you need to work on as a team?
Scott: “Offensive production. We need to change the way we approach offense. We are going to start looking at ways to get players high percentage shots.”
Phoenix: What is your past coaching experience?
Scott: “I started coaching basketball when I was 20 years old. I spent the last three years as the head boys basketball coach at Jefferson County High School. In 2010, I was named the Lakeway Regional Coach of the Year.”
