What is WikiLeaks? WikiLeaks is a network of informants all over the world. Their purpose is to release classified information and documents about various governments and organizations. Some recently “released” documents include:
* 250,000 diplomatic cables from various countries;
* a video of an Apache helicopter gunship attacking civilians in Afghanistan;
* 779 dossiers of prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.
Julian Assange is the founder of Wikileaks, but WikiLeaks has a network of informants (most of whose identities are unknown) who upload the information where it is reviewed and possibly published. How the informers get the information is unknown.
The quality of Wikileaks information can vary according to its source and other factors. Anyone can upload something on WikiLeaks so the information is not all credible.
The US government is actually a strong opponent of WikiLeaks, but it does not have the power to shut them down because of the Freedom of Speech.
WikiLeaks is not at one location. It is a network. Although it can be argued that the location of the servers is the actual location, the location of the servers is unknown and they are said to be protected by military-grade security systems.
