Greyson Chance is a young Youtube sensation gone pro. He first caught people’s attentions when he sang Lady Gaga’s song, “Paparazzi”, during his sixth grade music festival. The video of his performance became viral, gaining 45 million hits as of December of last year. The singer/pianist later got signed by Interscope Records, joining Lady Gaga. He released his debut single, “Waiting Outside the Lines”, in October which was a hit. His debut album, Hold on ‘Til the Night, was released in August of last year.
When I first heard his debut single, “Waiting Outside the Lines”, I immediately guessed that most of his songs would be like the single, piano based, and I was right. A majority of his songs were piano based. This included “Cheyenne”, “Heart Like a Stone”, “Hold on ‘Till the Night”, and “Unfriend You”. They had the inspirational feeling, utilizing violins to give it that motivational, uplifting feel. You could definitely hear Lady Gaga in his voice though, especially in the song “Heart Like a Stone”. When I first heard Chance since the song, I honestly thought it was Lady Gaga. “Waiting Outside the Lines” was the song that I could not stop singing. It was such an inspiring song. It talked about not living inside a box anymore and taking chances.
I personally liked all of his piano based songs, though I wouldn’t call any of those songs the best song on the CD. My favorites of the CD were the songs that were more acoustic, songs like “Stranded”, “Home is in Your Eyes”, “Little London Girl”, and “Summertrain”. These songs were more free and fun. These were the songs I can dance to in my seat, bobbing my head, shaking my shoulders. My personal favorite was “Little London Girl”. It was the most upbeat and fun song on the CD. The song “Stranded” is up there on my favorites too. It made me feel like I was on the beach or on an island in the sun on vacation.
My first impression of Greyson Chance was that he was a pretty good singer, especially for someone his age. The songs in Hold On ‘Til the Night are the type you sing along to, kind of like Adele’s songs. Most of his songs are serious, but there are a few fun songs sprinkled here and there. Over all it’s a pretty good CD. I would definitely add “Little London Girl”, “Stranded”, “Waiting Outside the Lines”, and “Unfriend You” to my ipod. I’d give it three and a half stars out of five.
