The most highly anticipated movie of 2012. Can you believe it’s finally here?. The Hunger Games, a book to film adaptation by Susan Collins and directed by Gary Ross. The movie is expected by its millions of fans to be one of the most epic movie series ever. The story follows a 16 year old girl, Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence) who resides in a dystopian society in future North America. This society of Panem consists of a Capital, which rules over 12 separate districts. Katniss lives in the impoverished District 12. To prove the capital’s power, every year they chose one boy and one girl from the ages of twelve and eighteen to be placed in an arena...and fight to the death. The author, Susan Collins, states that she got the gruesome idea of the Hunger Game from the ancient Greek legend of the Minotaur. In the story, King Mino of Crete ordered 7 young men and women to be sacrificed to a half-man-half-bull monster kept underground. But back to the Hunger Games, Katniss’s sister Prim was one of the ill-fated children chosen to enter the games, but Katniss volunteers to take Prim’s place. The other District 12 tribute is the town baker’s son, Peeta Mellark, played by Josh Hutcherson. And of course, as every great story goes, a love triangle emerges between Katniss, Petta and Katniss’ best friend Gale. Katniss and Gale had become friends by illegally hunting in the woods together to feed their families. Liam Hemsworth, as Gale, is left behind as Peeta and Katniss head towards the capital, and possibly their death.

The trailer gives us a glimpse into the dingy district twelve, the dazzling capital and even games arena. “I can’t think of a more brilliant way to end the trailer to director Gary Ross’ movie than watching a terrified Katniss and Peeta, played by Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, racing for their backpacks and the protection of the woods,” wrote Entertainment Weekly’s Karen Valby. It is expected that the film, coming out on Friday March 23rd might reach a $100 million debut, beating the first Twilight film by $30 million. But don’t take this the wrong way, especially the guys. This is definitely not a vampire chick-flick. This novel does star a girl, but Katniss hunts with a bow and arrows, doesn’t have any mushy feelings, almost dies of hunger, and battles and kills fellow contestants in the hunger games. There is plenty of blood and guts for the male audience out there. But those with weak stomachs shouldn’t worry, Katniss’s story is so captivating and ensnaring, its almost impossible to put the books down. Everyone should go see what is expected to be an amazing movie, or you will surely be missing out on something huge!
