Members of the girls' team anxiously watch a game from the bench. - Janice Adomeit
Beginning with practices, then progressing to games, the 2012 soccer season is off and running. Although the first several games were losses, the girls have learned from their mistakes. The first game was a 1-2 loss for Lakeside against Beloit Memorial on an awfully cold and windy day.
The next game against Mayville had much more enjoyable playing conditions, but unfortunately ended in a loss. The final score was 3-0, Mayville. The next two games also had similar outcomes against Mt. Horeb and Columbus, but the soccer team would not give up. Sill determined, the girls’ hard work finally paid off. Lakeside earned its first win against Whitewater on April 16th.
Coaches Josh Vinluan and Clark Schultz have strategically placed players to utilize their skills. Olivia Scheiber, a talented sophomore forward, has scored two goals this season. One of these goals was scored in the team’s game against Whitewater.
Olivia is the team’s leading scorer, but she couldn’t have done it without the help of her hard-working teammates. Macy Marks assisted the goal to put Lakeside on the score board. Midfielders and forwards did a fantastic job offensively, but the defense is not to be forgotten.
Mikaela Vomhof, a senior and captain, was an essential player in stopping Whitewater’s attacks. Stephanie Buske also did an astounding job of not letting a single ball past her into the net. Again and again she blocked all the shots that came her way. Several accurate corner and penalty kicks were made by the freshman, Megan Moll.
In all, the varsity team won by a single point in a grueling eighty minute game.
Once the season started rolling, the girls started to work like a team. Better passes, throw-ins, and communication helped enable this varsity team to take its first conference win.
The next game against Poynette/Portage will be on April 19th. This is also a conference game, and Lakeside has hopes of keeping its one game winning streak alive.
No matter what the outcome is, this team hopes to reflect its God-given talents in every game and practice. Win or lose, the team members know where their heads and their hearts should be.
