Walled Lake Western’s choir department held its annual Pop Concert on May 31 and June 1.
As senior, Shana Hughes said, “Pop Concert is fun and exciting for friends, students and family! This was my fourth year being in it and I can truly say I will remember every Pop Concert experience even after high school!”
The final choir concert of the year sung anything but the stereotypical “choral” songs. Pop Concert was made up of many different song selections, from oldies (this year some went as far back as the 50s) to recent major hits. Each of the choirs performed two songs, one slow and one more upbeat. In addition to these, there was about 15-20 feature acts which made it into the show through an audition process.
In order to audition, you must be a choir student. You may audition for a solo, duet or small group made up students from any grade. As for the song, it must be school appropriate and students are advised to pick a song that fits their voice and personality.
11 acts performed both nights and eight additional acts were split with a different four between the two nights. Some of the acts included: Amber Garner and Ariel Grayer singing “River Deep, Mountain High”, Leigh Maple and Carter Jones singing “Barton Hallow”, “You Make Me Feel So Young” by Ryan Cassel, and Cat Kean in “Warrior”. Other songs performed included: “Somebody to Love”, “Lonesome Road”, “How Will I Know”, and “Sound of Silence”.
When asked what was one of his favorite part about Pop Concert, junior Jack Phillipson said, “I love being able to show people that singing in choir isn’t just about singing slow songs in tuxedoes, and that we can put on a great show with some songs that everyone can sing along with.”
