At the state track and field meet in Austin May 11-12, the relays carried the Lady Pirates to fourth place with 32 points as the 4x200 set a season best while taking the gold medal in 1:40.81 with Mexia in fifth. In the 400 relay, the quartet came in a close third behind Carrollton Ranchview's winning 47.45 by clocking 47.75, once again just ahead of the Lady Blackcats (fourth in 48.17).
In the meet's final event, the 4x400, the team champion Connally Cadets clinched the title as they were timed in 3:54.89 in first, while La Vega was ninth in 4:11.45 in running its third race of the day. All three squads were comprised of Shawnequa Norwood, DeAijha Boyce-Hicks, Zhaquavion Hall, and Chelsi Gill.
"In the 800 relay, Shawnequa was about fifth at the exchange; then DeeDee got the stick and pulled into a tie for fourth," Gill said. "On the third leg, Quay moved up to a virtual tie and handed me the stick in third, so I had to get three people and won by about three yards."
Four days after the meet, Gill was receiving a 10-lb. weight in the weight room, but it dropped onto her right foot, requiring three stitches at a Bellmead clinic and keeping her from walking for a day.
"Despite the pain, I was very happy that it didn't happen the previous because my team needed me and probably wouldn't have won its title," Gill said.
