Over the past few months, students have been carefully choosing their classes based on their academic achievement and their future plans in life. There are many different perspectives of how this was done and how it happened. Teachers, counselors, and students all view this extensive and difficult process differently.

Mrs. Chapman claimed that while she didn’t have a large amount of work to do during this time, the teachers were very busy going through each individual student’s profile and academic abilities. However she was able to research the most popular elective chosen: social studies. It has been understood that this was the case because it is not a required course, but many students prefer to take just to stay on the safe side, or sometimes their parents preferred that their child take this class due to the fact that it has been familiar to them ever since kindergarten and they believe their child should continue that process all throughout high school to remain successful. She didn’t have a record of popular classes, but she noted that academic classes are limited and divided even amongst the students. She also said “this process was not difficult for me because the high school teachers came to help the teachers when choosing the classes for their students." Mrs. Chapman is only one of the many staff that was beneficial to students when they were choosing their classes for an exciting freshman year!

Starla F. claims that she is taking honors language arts, algebra 1, college prep biology, introduction to theater, and orchestra. She is also planning to do multiple extracurricular activities next year. She is doing relay for life, junior beta, FBLA, science fair, student ambassador team, SADD, and yearbook. She also said that she went through a lot of stress when choosing her high school classes because she wants to make good decisions because colleges look at high school grades and it can determine whether or not you get into that college. Starla is one of the many students that thought long and hard about her decisions for 9th grade, and based on observations she should be very successful.

Mrs. Stephenson is one of many hard working teachers at Couch and she had a lot of useful information about her hard work along with the hours other teachers put in as well. She claims “based on student performance and effort shown in class, teachers choose classes that they feel students will be most successful in.” She also said that the high school teachers came over from Grayson to discuss what options students have and what kind of student aptitudes they are looking for in each class. You may have noticed that your teacher was a little frazzled during that specific time, however they were not stressed, but busy because they had to go through every single student’s registration form.

This was not an easy task for students and staff, but it makes up in the long run because all the time teachers put in was for students’ benefits and it helps them have a successful future.
