In a survey conducted by The Howler, Chaparral High School is a school that you should be comfortable sending your
children to compared to the rest of the United States.
In
comparison to the American Association of University Women study, Chaparral High students did better in all areas except admitting to sexually harassing someone and
witnessing sexual harassment in school. In both surveys students were asked if
they had ever been sexually harassed, if they had ever sexually harassed
someone, and if they had witnessed sexual harassment. The number of
participants in the AAUW survey was greater, but the large response of students
surveyed at Chaparral High allows The Howler to accurately compare the two surveys.
Students at Chaparral High have experienced far less sexual harassment than those in the AAUW
survey. At Chaparral High, 18.4 percent of boys said they had experienced sexual
harassment, versus the 24 percent of boys in the AAUW survey where as 35 percent of girls had experienced harassment here, and 36 percent in the national study. Something more surprising was
that at Chaparral High 57.1 percent of boys and 32 percent of girls who had been
sexually harassed, had also sexually harassed someone. This compares favorably to 92 percent of
girls and 80 percent of boys in the AAUW survey.
When
it came to sexually harassing someone at Chaparral High, the results were poorer than AAUW’s. This can be from a high amount of honesty at Chaparral High campus, or the difference in the number of participants. For Chaparral High 18.4 percent
of boys and 18 percent of girls said they have sexually harassed someone,
while in the AAUW survey 14 percent of girls and 18 percent of boys admitted to
it.
When
students look around the halls of Chaparral High, what are they looking at? Well according the
results, they are witnessing more sexual harassment than those of other high
schools around the United States. A total of 39.5 percent of boys and 31.9
percent of girls at Chaparral High said they have witnessed sexual harassment in school,
while 33 percent of girls and 24 percent of boys said they had in the national
survey.
So
when a student witnessed someone being sexually harassed, what did they do? Chaparral High has more good citizens than other schools in
the United States. Out of the total number of students surveyed, 6.6 percent of
boys and 15 percent of girls reported witnessing sexual harassment, while in
the AAUW survey only 5 percent of boys and 9 percent of girls reported the
incidents they had witnessed
