It is clear that an equal balance of talent and desire is needed to propel a team to greatness. High hopes were placed upon the 2012 varsity baseball team at North Harford and they have risen to the challenge.
“There were very high expectations going in, and the team has met all of them, even under constant pressure, this is why they[the baseball team] were most memorable team of 2012,” said Athletic Director Tim Larrimore.
Desire and talent can make a team look great on paper, but if the teammates do not know how to be social and to work together, then the team will fail on the field.
“I will always look back and remember the team, we have a lot of fun on and off the field,” said senior Brandon Wooton.
Senior Jon Hammer agrees.
“That’s what made the season so memorable, a great group of guys to play baseball with,” added Hammer.
After last season’s devastating loss in the state semi final game, the team is hungry for a victory. And they have won time and time again this year. The team has a record of 22-2. So far this season the Hawks won their first conference championship, the Chesapeake divisional, UCBACs, and the regional championship game against Towson with a score of 7-1.
The pressure upon the team was not surprising, it has been 17 years since a state championship was won at North Harford. “Going in this year it was expected that the boys would make it to the state-semi finals, but it is still very exciting,” said assistant coach Mark Truszkowski, “but we have great pitching, solid hitting, and good communication, which all led to us having an exciting season.”
Junior Austin Reitz agrees.
“This team has a lot of talent and desire to win; after losing semi-finals last year we all really want states,” said junior Austin Reitz. “We definitely need our talent as well, so with 13 seniors on the team this year, we have lots of talent.”
Although just winning the semi final game won’t be enough to satisfy this squad’s hunger.
“In past years we hoped to make it to the semi-finals, but this year the boys wanted the state title,” said assistant coach Jeff Burrows.
After winning the divisional game the boys made it to the state playoff game on Saturday, May 26 on their way to the state-semi finals. the anticipation for the game was immense because last year North Harford was defeated in the semi-final game. Even with their anxiety about the game the boys pulled through with an 7-0 win at home against Towson High school.
Senior Kevin Mooney pitched a perfect game with no hitters getting onto base.
“It feels great, going into this season, pitching a perfect game was my goal or myself,” said senior Kevin Mooney.
