The honors keep coming in for recent Pirate grad William Stinnett as he was named MVP for scoring 25 points (16 in the first half) and hitting all four three-pointers in leading the South to a 124-98 victory over the North in the 80th Annual Texas High School Coaches All-Star Game July 30 at the Bill Greehey Arena at Austin’s St. Mary’s University.
Over 12,000 high school coaches attended the convention, and the game was televised live by Fox Sports Southwest. Former Baylor basketball coach Jim Haller did the play-by-play and raved about William and the fact that his mother was a star at Baylor.
Players were selected by a committee of high school coaches and athletic directors. William and Midway’s Orion Stewart were the only players from this area, arriving in San Antonio on Saturday, July 28. They stayed in dorms at Trinity University, were treated to a special luncheon, and practiced on Saturday, Sunday and Monday before the game that night. Each player got to keep his uniform (including shoes), an autographed basketball, and a wristwatch engraved with their names and “Texas High School Coaches All Star.” Most of the players had already committed to Division I schools. William represented La Vega and Waco very well. Coaches Clay Cody, Kevin Gill and George Dixon were in attendance.
