The origin of the character of Santa Claus dates back to the legendary bishop, Nicholas, who lived in Myra in the 4th century. Saint Nicholas was an elderly man that helped the poor by throwing gold coins into their windows.
Santa wore more than the traditional red outfit. In early illustrations, he wore blue or green. It wasn't until 1931 that Coca-Cola started using the red suit for the jolly old man know as Santa Claus.
One of the biggest questions is, why does Santa use reindeer? It is said that he needs a quick way to be transported, so he uses them so he can go to all of the places he has to go in one night. In fact, it wan't until Clement Clark Moore's poem (1823) "Twas the Night Before Christmas" that Santa was associated with a sleigh and reindeer.
