The students of Wiggins High School demonstrated their
history knowledge on Thursday, December 13, at 7:00 p.m. A local History Day competition was held in Mr.
Clay’s room and the hallway outside the room. Mr. Clay and Mr. Sees, along with
three college students that were recruited, were the official judges of the
entries.
“For future years I would like to get more involvement and
have more judges and input from people with a knowledge of history,” said Mr.
Clay.
“It’s really good to see kids taking an interest in history
and putting so much hard work into their projects,” said Mr. Sees.
Students in World History and students in history club
competed in different areas. Students were given the choice of what type of
project they wanted to do and if they wanted to do it as a group or individual.
They also got to choose their topic but it had to fit the theme of "Turning Points in History."
Most of the students
chose to create a group exhibit, individual paper, or group documentary. There
were seven group exhibits, eight individual papers, and three group documentaries.
The students had been working on their projects all
semester. “I feel like we shouldn’t have to do so much research for one project,
but I didn’t mind it this time,” said sophomore Victoria Medrano.
“I feel like my partner and I did well and we really showed
that we knew our topic,” said sophomore Matt Ewertz.
There will be a prize awarded to the best overall project.
Katelynn Lippitt and Clint Ferris had projects that really stood out, according
to senior Kassidy Knutson.
The students that will be moving on to the regional
competition are a lot farther ahead in their research than they were at this
time last year, according to Mr. Clay. The regional competition will be held in
Greeley in March 2, 2013.
