Ask any coach, they’ll say 6-foot-4 Jermaine Mallett, Metro’s best all-around player, is the best in whatever sports he plays. He was a standout soccer player, an outstanding Falcon on the football team under the guidance of Coach Todd McDaniel and “The best all-around player in the Metro area as he scores, rebounds and plays defense,” says Coach Herman Sanders, who had led the Falcons to the Big House for two consecutive seasons.
It’s easy to understand why Wingfield’s coaches chose Jermaine Most Athletic this year. Sportsmanship, athletic ability and academic success boosted his nomination.
As the Falcons prepared to return to the Mississippi Coliseum, Jermaine averaged 16.7419 with 519 points in the team’s first 31 games. Last year’s defeat made the Falcons more determined than ever to return this year. “It felt like the end of the world,” said Jermaine as Madison Central made a 3-pointer in the last second, ending the Falcons hope of winning the first state championship since 1969. Even the last game of the playoffs was tense as16.7419 the Falcons beat rival Forest Hill by only one point.
“Jermaine is the glue that holds the team together,” said Sanders. “He’s the type of boy you would like your daughter to date,” said McDaniel.
Jermaine was recently selected as one of 12 players in the state to participate in the Mississippi Alabama All-Star Game this summer. He is the second player from Wingfield to play in the annual event, and was also part of the All-Division, All South State, and All State teams.
“In the championship game in the district tournmanment, our boys defeated Forest Hill 64 to 62. In the South State Tournament, our boys defeated Forest Hill 69 to 68. Our boys finished the regular season ranked number 4 in the state of Mississippi,” said Sanders who will be coaching the North and South Coca-Cola All-Star Basketball Game July 4.
