Most high school students have a schedule consistent of attending school, doing homework, and trying to maintain a social life. Freshman Megan Heneghan does all of these activities—as well as working to maintain her national rank in the tennis world.
Beginning the interview with only a vague knowledge of Megan's astounding athletic achievements and busy schedule, it was amazing to see how "together" she is. Her blonde hair tied neatly in a pony tail, and a smile on her face, a certain maturity radiated from her, as she patiently awaited the appointment.
After being quickly briefed on the feature story that was to be centered around her, Megan gave a straight-to-the-point answer in response to an initial question. “I started to play tennis when I was four."
She spoke further about the humble beginnings of her still-developing tennis career when she explained who had inspired her to pick up her first racquet. "My dad got me into it," she explains. She continues to emphasize how big of an influence her father has been on her tennis career, even since the beginning. "He just took me out and started hitting balls at me," she informs with a grin and a nod.
With the initial encouragement from her father, Megan continued to persevere in the strenuous schedule that tennis demands of all of its participants–especially of those seeking to go professional. This Freshman’s journey along the path to tennis greatness brings her to Beckman High Schoo, where she has earned her place on the Girl’s Tennis Varsity Team. Joining the team places her in a position to work along side the other talented female students Beckman has in its tennis program. With the inquiry of how it feels to be training alongside these other girls, she responded ecstatically, “I really like it. I like supporting my team!”
The high energy that comes with her avid support of the team is seen once again as she talks about Coach Holly, the presiding coach of the Girl’s Varsity Tennis Team. “She’s a really great coach. She helps us do our best.” Megan’s tennis career has well-planted roots, and its growth seems exponential, as various pertinent coaches mold her into an even better tennis player.
And what of the achievements this vivacious tennis princess has garnered thus far? Megan has gained a national rank, which was determined by a very decisive tennis match in Anaheim . A match she looks back on fondly. This was just one match among many.. “You play so many matches... and all the hard work you’ve done has paid off.” Wise words from an experienced combatant in the battlefields of the green and white courts.
Only fourteen, and already well on her way to becoming tennis royalty. Watch out Anna Kournikova, Megan Heneghan is on the scene!
