“Win it or wreck it.” That’s what senior Miranda Lembcke thinks about when driving her Midwest Modified racecar.
Lembcke has been racing since she was 6 years old. “I wanted to race because my whole family races. I’m third generation on both my mom and dad’s side of the family,” said Lembcke. Her dad, Shane Lembcke, races a Modified, Josh Ames, her uncle, races a Midwest Modified and Tim Ames, her grandpa, and races a Late Model.
Races happen once a week throughout the summer in Belgrade, Great Falls and Billings. There are tracks all over the country, though. People of all ages come to watch and cheer on the races every weekend. Some people will travel from as far as Canada to race.
There are several different kinds of races and cars. On a normal night, street stock, super stock and modified cars race, and there could be around 750 people in the crowd. On a special feature night, Midwest Modified, Late Models and Sprint cars race, and the crowd doubles.
According to Lembcke, being a female racecar driver means the boys hit harder and expect you to lose. “They don’t expect much out of you when you’re a female,” she said
Even though Lembcke races with the boys, she is still very feminine: she still enjoys shopping and hanging out with her girlfriends, she is relaxed, easy going, quiet and very adventurous. Lembcke said with a smile, “There are not too many things that I wouldn’t try.”
“The most important thing to remember about racing is it’s not as easy as it looks, especially dirt track,” she said. Lembcke has crashed a few times: twice on dirt track and three or four times when she was younger.
Lembcke says the adrenaline rush is her favorite part of racing. If there was anything that could stop her from racing it would be money or a medical injury. Lembcke’s grandpa sponsors her and her parents help out a lot.
Lembcke’s mom, Samantha, says watching her daughter race makes her nervous because she’s had a few crashes and it can be dangerous. Samantha feels that it’s exciting to watch her compete with the boys. “I support her most by being there for her and taping every race,” said Samantha.
“Being the only Park High student to race doesn’t make me feel any different because there are other students from Belgrade and Bozeman that race in my class,” Lembcke said.
“It’s just another hobby. I just love to race.”
