The City of Southfield celebrated the immortal Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a Peace Walk on January 16. Residents marched from New Hope Baptist Church, singing songs of rejoice and perseverance, to the Southfield Pavilion, for a ceremony commemorating King’s legacy.

Hundreds of students participated, including 439 from Southfield High, according to school Principal Michael Horn.

Among the walkers was Jade Ware, a senior. She says she took part to show she appreciated her civil rights.

Not in attendance was freshman DeAndré White. He says he did not participate because his twin, VaRandré, failed to awaken him.

Freshmen Varandre White and Denzel Payton, however, both attended. White said he went for Martin Luther King, Jr., because "Dr. King sacrificed for us."

Payton says, because of King’s efforts, he felt obligated to honor the legacy of the late civil rights activist.

If MLK had lived long enough, I'm sure he would advance this cause, like his son Dexter does now: Aren't humans amazing? They kill wildlife - birds, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice and foxes by the million in order to protect their domestic animals and their feed. Then they kill domestic animals by the billion and eat them. This in turn kills people by the millions, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - health conditions like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and cancer. So then humans spend billions of dollars torturing and killing millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, few people recognize the absurdity of humans, who kill so easily and violently, and then plead for "Peace on Earth." ~Revised Preface to Old MacDonald's Factory Farm by C. David Coates~ _____________ Anyone can break this cycle of violence! Everyone has the power to choose compassion!
