Students Against Destructive Decisions is a nation wide foundation started a Central High School 2 years ago. It is a student organization that promotes healthy choices. SADD educates students on drug and alcohol awareness, tobacco prevention, safe driving habits, suicide prevention and healthy relationships. Through activities such as Red Ribbon Week, the ever-growing SADD brings attention to tough issues facing teens today. "SADD is great to join if you want to get involved in fun activities to promote smart decisions." Sarah Collazo Vice President of SADD.
Do you remember the Great American Smoke Out Day? Students were encouraged to sign a pledge, stating they would stop smoking for that day. And who could forget the rivalry over the Penny War. Students brought in their pennies to raise their grades total and other coins and bills to lower the other grades’ total. The sophomores won an afternoon of movie viewing. Altogether $1707.60 was raised and donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. For Christmas, members of SADD made ornaments they placed on the Tree of Life. These ornaments sent positive messages to the other students. Also during this time food and other items were collected and donated to the Emergency Shelter in Altoona. Spirit Week was a celebration of the Super Bowl. Students were able to have their faces painted, answer trivia about the Steelers and were rewarded prized in the Fanatic Fans contest. For Valentines Day's Hugs and Kisses Day, SADD sold Hershey Chocolate to raise money for the organization.
Teens Against Tobacco Use is another program sponsored by SADD. The members of TATU, along with puppets, perform a show at local elementary and middle schools. They promote awareness and prevention of tobacco products. The last two activities sponsored by SADD this year were the Buzz Free Prom where over 200 students pledged to be alcohol free, and the Graduation Campaign, a send off for the Class of 2006, giving them the message to have a healthy lifestyle.
"SADD is comprised of a diverse group of students who are very active in the school community. It's a great way for CHS students to get involved. Join SADD!" Mrs. Thompson SADD advisor.
