Clayton Valley’s radio station, KVHS 90.5 The Edge, is getting a tune up.
According to KVHS’s general manager, Melissa Wilson, the students are remodeling the station, with the help of donations from Riccomi Construction and Fine Floor Fashions.
“This station is going through a dramatic change,” said Wilson. “It will make a huge difference on how we run things here.”
During the remodeling, the station will continue to air its normal music and shows.
KVHS is a student-run radio station that started in 1965. It is in several rooms in the M and S wings, and some of the station was built in what used to be a bathroom 35 years ago.
The station mostly plays punk, heavy metal and ska, and once or twice a week will have a “specialty show” featuring a local band, one genre of music or playing oldies, according to Wilson. It broadcasts throughout Contra Costa, Solono and Napa counties, and sometimes further.
“You can get 90.5 The Edge all the way to Davis,” Wilson said.
High school students and adults from around the county taking the radio class learn how to run the station, record commercials, DJ their own shows and what can and cannot be said while on-air.
“I think it is a great experience,” said KVHS student Chris Cesavatti. “It is definitely worthwhile.”
Many KVHS graduates have become famous on other radio stations or television shows. One KVHS member, Jeff Richards, is now a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live.
With new computer technology, the station can now run 24/7, even without a DJ. A computer plays music and runs pre-recorded commercials. Among the new additions to the station are “a completely digital Numix control board” and other new equipment to replace their 20-year-old equipment, Wilson said. The old board will be used as a back-up and for new students to practice on before they actually go on-air.
KVHS students are also filling the walls with sand, caulking them and covering them with industrial carpet to soundproof the rooms and make better acoustics when they record.
Wilson hopes the remodeling will improve “the quality of stuff on the air.”
Eagle Eye staff member Roya Biarash contributed to this story.
