BVAL league play is underway boys basketball team are in hopes of a league championship. After six games played, the Eagles are starting with a winning record of 4-2 and an overall record of 11-7.
“I think we are playing well but our win loss record is not showing how well we are playing,” said junior Christian Rojas.
The Eagles faced the Ygnacio Valley Warriors on Jan 13. CV was victorious and clinched the win 61-34.
CV suffered a loss to the Deer Valley Wolverines on Jan. 12, 45-40. The Contra Costa Times predicted that the Wolverines would finish in second place in the BVAL. Senior Drew Menez returned to the Eagles lineup after suffering a sprained ankle, which kept him out of five games.
“Freedom was a trial run just to make sure I was fine on my ankle. I was rusty against Deer Valley, but I was feeling good against Ygnacio Valley,” said Menez about his return.
The Eagles topped the Freedom Falcons on Jan. 10 in a blowout game 70-32. CV bounced back after a De La Salle Spartan loss and conquered the Falcons.
“Our team is starting to really click, similar to the team last year,” said Menez about the team’s recent success.
CV headed into a game Jan. 6 with league rival De La Salle. After beating the Spartans last year, the Eagles had high hopes for this game.
De La Salle was ranked 19th in the nation by Maxpreps.com before heading into the game.
CV’s defense held the Spartans to 16 points in the first half and the score was 16-10 at the break with the Eagles trailing.
The team continued to give a valiant effort in the second half but the Spartans began to pull away half way through the third quarter and never looked back.
DLS beat CV with a final 45-29. Senior John Del Bene led the Eagles with 11 points, and junior Travis Ford followed closely with nine.
The first day of league kicked off on Jan. 3 against the Liberty Lions at Liberty. CV shut down the Lions 45-29.
