Kaplan College Preparatory School is a virtual education, one that caters to a group of students with diverse interests, commitments, and goals that ask them to forgo the brick and mortar school environment. However, those students are becoming very involved in Kaplan’s community.

Over a year ago, under the supervision of Mrs. Carolyn Fitzpatrick, the Student Government came into existence. Many students joined Student Government so they could communicate with other students. One member, Andrea Davis, said that she “joined Student Government because I was very interested in interacting and meeting some of the other students at Kaplan.”

Davis also said that she “thought Student Government would be a great way to unify our school, so students wouldn’t be disconnected from engaging with other students who may share their same goals and interests.” This goal seems to be prominent in members’ minds as Student Government’s objectives are becoming oriented towards the development of a virtual space where students can interact. As such, all members are invited to join a social networking site called Ning where they can communicate with each other and Mrs. Fitzpatrick in a secure environment.

Student Government is also working on finding a way to include all Kaplan students in this new endeavor and provide them with a nonthreatening and comfortable place to correspond with other students. As expanding the lines of interaction between students is Student Government’s aim many meetings, such as the most recent February meeting, are geared towards presenting projects that can meet this goal.

Additionally, Student Government is not oblivious to issues erupting outside of the Kaplan community. Many members have suggested raising money for important causes, such as the recent crises in Haiti, by holding fundraisers or other activities. However, the challenges of executing these projects come from Kaplan’s virtual campus. The lack of a physical school and campus hinders some of Student Government’s aim. Nevertheless, members are working hard to overcome them and believe they will soon reach their goals for Kaplan.

Student Government is slowly growing in size and any KCPS students who want to join are welcome. Interested students may get information on about the next meeting by e-mailing Mrs. Fitzpatrick.
